Power Windows

Power Windows

Power windows is a short way of describing the mechanism in a car that automatically raises or lowers your window with the convenient push of one button.

These days, car power windows come standard on practically every car that is manufactured. But how do they work?

The whole concept of a "power window" on an automobile starts with the lifting mechanism, which is directly linked to the window itself. And electric motor is attached to a series of gears, and when the motor is activated (by the driver simply pressing down on the button), the motor activates the rest of the gears and the lifting mechanism raises the window.

In addition to the power window feature we're all familiar with, some car makers have gone the extra mile to add additional features to make some cars more appealing. The auto-down feature allows the driver to simply touch the window button once, and the window will roll all the way down. This eliminates the need for the driver to compress his or her finger on the button, and frees the hands faster. Some car models even feature an auto-up power window as well.

You may have seen a television commercial where the man walks up to his car, inserts his key to the door to unlock, and his windows go down. This clever feature is now on some cars as well, and is especially great for those hot summer days when you need to let the overwhelming hot air out of your car before you get in!

Another special feature some car makers include on their vehicles is a courtesy-on feature, which allows you to roll up your windows, even after you've removed the key from the ignition. Think of it as a "Grace period" of sorts for the all the busy people who absentmindedly attempt to leave their car with the windows down!

Ultimately, power windows are a wonderful feature on cars, and since it's so mainstream now, it would be difficult to find a new car without this. Talk to your salesman about power windows on your new car for even more information.
